English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Program FAQs

How long is the ESOL program?

The Intensive Transition Program (ITP) in ESOL is a one-semester bridge program. On the other hand, the duration of credit ESOL classes may vary. ESOL 92 and 94 offer students who need more time to develop the opportunity to learn additional content in a second semester.

When can I take regular classes at Kapiolani Community College (KCC)?

Any student in ESOL 92 or above can also take a selection of KCC's credit course offerings.

I am an international student. How can I get my I-20?

Contact us for assistance with the I-20. Contact Information is provided below.

I have a TOEFL® score over 500. What classes can I take at KCC?

Students who score over 500 on the TOEFL® should take the writing placement test at KCC. Based on the writing placement test, students may be placed in ESOL 94 or English 100.

Go to the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) website for more information. See the Related Links section.

I already took ESL at a college on the mainland. Can I take regular classes at KCC?

It depends on your academic preparation. If you do not have a TOEFL® score, you can come to KCC for a personal interview. We will also contact your previous academic ESL program coordinator and determine if you can be admitted to the Intensive ESOL Program at KCC.

Do I have to have a TOEFL® score?

Students applying to KCC from outside the U.S. must provide a valid TOEFL® or equivalent test score. Students who have completed the intermediate level at a college ESL program in the U.S. do not have to provide a TOEFL® score. KCC will contact your previous academic ESL program coordinator and determine if you can be admitted to the Intensive ESOL Program at KCC.

How can I apply to your program?

You can find all of the application materials and information at the ESOL Program website. See the Related Links section. You can also call our friendly staff at the Honda International Center (see contact information below).

I already have a college degree in my own country. Can I transfer my credits to the University of Hawaii?

You can complete a "transcript evaluation form" at KCC. Although not all credits are transferable, many students are able to transfer credits and thereby shorten the time it takes them to get a college degree from the University of Hawaii.

Do you have housing?

KCC is currently developing housing programs for students. For the most current information, please contact the Honda International Center (See contact information below).

I am an international student. How can I get my visa?

After you have completed your application, KCC will need to evaluate your application. If you are accepted, we will quickly send you an acceptance letter with an I-20 form. You may then take our letter and the I-20 form to the embassy to obtain your student visa.

What will I study in your program?

This is an academic program. You will study topics related to the social sciences and history. The focus of the class is academic reading and writing. Students also conduct surveys, do presentations, and prepare reports and materials in our wireless computer lab.
