Study Abroad

Programs

Currently, the UH Community College (UHCC) students have the following models as possible study abroad programs:

  1. Direct Enrollment Program
  2. Short-Term Field Study Program
  3. Academic Year / Semester Program
  4. Language (Immersion) & Culture Program

All costs, duration of stay, requirements and credits offered may vary depending upon the individual study abroad program. Please be sure to contact the Study Abroad Coordinator, Ken Kiyohara for detailed information.

Direct Enrollment Program

Direct Enrollment Programs are designed as 3-8 week programs and based upon an existing academic agreement between the receiving and sending institutions. Institutional agreements enable participants to actively enroll in courses designed specifically towards meeting the academic needs of the program attendees. Course work may include intensive Japanese language and culture while participating in field trips as well as homestay programs. Course work taken at the receiving institution frequently satisfies the general education requirements of culture or elementary language studies although not all courses may be eligible for transfer.

Short-Term Field Study Program

Short-Term Field Study Programs are designed as 1-3 week programs, in which, all course materials, coordination, and field study are planned and directed by individual non-language faculty on behalf of the prospective student. Students interested in Short-Term Field Study are required to include a brief proposal specific to the area of intended academic research and also must be directly related to the prospective student’s long-term academic or career goals. Course work taken at the receiving institution may not be eligible for transfer due to the brief length of study and exposure overseas although possible articulation of courses may be considered upon return.

All costs, duration of stay, requirements and credits offered may vary depending upon the individual study abroad programs. Please be sure to contact the Study Abroad Coordinator, Ken Kiyohara for detailed information.

Academic Year / Semester Program

Students interested in the Academic Year / Semester Program may anticipate being abroad anywhere from 10-16 weeks as a semester program to one full academic year. Academic Year / Semester Programs allow students the flexibility to experience study abroad for a predetermined period of time and only at an institution with which the University of Hawaii has an affiliation agreement. Course work taken at the receiving institution frequently satisfies the general education requirements although not all courses may be eligible for transfer.

Language (Immersion) & Culture Program

Language (Immersion) & Culture Programs are designed, coordinated and led by individual foreign language faculty. Study durations differ from 2-6 weeks and student group sizes also vary depending upon the receiving institution, ranging from 5-20 students. Studies focus specifically on language and culture awareness due to the short duration overseas. Course work taken at the receiving institution frequently satisfies the general education requirements of culture or elementary language studies although not all courses may be eligible for transfer.
